The Edexcel BTEC Level 2 qualifications in sport provide an engaging and stimulating introduction to the sports industry. The courses encourage personal development through practical participation and performance in a range of sports and exercise activities. They will give students an understanding and appreciation of the human body and the development of health-related and sport specific fitness. They encourage students to develop their communication and leadership skills through sport and provide underpinning knowledge and skills for employment in the sports industry or progression onto sport specific courses post-16.
They will:
- be able to share interests, ideas and opinions with other people who are interested in Sport.
- learn about how their body works and the effects of exercise on the body.
- develop their knowledge of a wide range of sports and fitness regimes.
- learn many skills which are useful in a wide range of career pathways.
- undertake regular exercise to contribute to a healthy lifestyle.
- improve their wellbeing through active sport and exercise participation.
KS5:
The Edexcel BTEC Level 3 qualifications in sport are a continuation of the Level 2 qualification that we offer. The course gives students the opportunity to link education and the world of work in engaging, relevant and practical ways. It enables learners to enhance their English and mathematical competence in relevant, applied scenarios as well as support learners’ development of transferable interpersonal skills, including working with others, problem solving, independent study and personal, learning and thinking skills.
Fundamentally, after completing this qualification we want our students to have an insightful understanding of how the body’s major systems adapt to training as well as giving the students experience of designing sport and exercise sessions and situations in a coaching/personal trainer/sports development context.
Ultimately, it will give learners a route through education that has clear progression pathways to higher education, an apprenticeship or employment.
Key concepts and key end points :
- By the end of year 11 every student will have a sound understanding of the rules and regulations of the sports that they have encountered during their PE lessons. The students will not be expected to have an expert understanding, but they will be expected to possess a good operational understanding of the different rules of the different sports. This is arguably more important than the students’ actual competence in the sports delivered, as some students have a greater aptitude for sport than others. So students with fewer innate basic skills can still make progress in their learning, in something that they may not be good at performing.
- We want the students’ to have retained a certain passion and level of commitment to the subject, making the effort to contribute fully during their PE lessons.
- Finally, by the end of year 11 we want the students to appreciate the relationship between good physical health and good mental health and to have the understanding that sport is good for them and it will prolong and enhance their lives beyond education.
